Alan Specht captures Long Island Amateur
Long Island Amateur champion Alan Specht
BAY SHORE, N.Y. — The Long Island Amateur Championship concluded Friday at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore, N.Y. Former St. John’s University golfer Alan Specht outlasted last year’s runner-up and #2 seed Darin Goldstein in a match that lasted 35 holes.
Goldstein earned the #2 seed via a 69 in the qualifying round and kept his strong play going with dominating wins in the first two rounds, winning 8-and-6 and 6-and-5. Goldstein eventually advanced to the 36-hole championship match with a 2-and-1 victory over Bryan Pendrick.
Specht, the #29 seed, also easily handled his opening-round match by way of a 6-and-5 victory. He would have to work much harder in his next matches, however, winning by slim margins to advance to the final.
In the final, Goldstein and Specht were neck-and-neck throughout the entire match, neither obtaining more than a 2-up lead until back-to-back bogeys by Goldstein gave Specht a 3-up advantage after 29 holes. However, Goldstein would win the next two holes to be only one down with five holes to play.
Specht wouldn’t budge, making four solid pars in a row to close out the match, handing Goldstein another runner-up finish.
