Eddie Hogan Cup Matches: Southern Cal Makes History
PORTLAND, OR (August 20, 2006) -- Not only did the team successfully win the event for the tenth time in the history of the event, they had the lowest team total since the event changed to a best three of four scores posting a 10-under par 36-hole result of 208-214—422, besting last year’s score by an incredible 19 strokes.
Additionally, Alex Shi Yup Kim of Fullerton, Calif. set a new individual record with a 7-under par 68-69—137, besting by 1-stroke the record set last year by fellow teammate Louis Amira of Valencia, Calif. who finished at 1-under par. Josh Anderson of Murrieta, Calif. completed the scoring with a 2-under par total.
The Oregon #1 team finished in second place at even-par 432, a score that also would have been an event record, were it not for the torrid scoring pace set by Southern California. Robbie Ziegler of Canby, Ore. finished alone in second place, recording the third best individual score in the history of the event at 5-under par 68-71—139. First round leader Isaiah Telles of Tualatin, Ore. was alone in third place at 3-under par.
To put these scores in perspective, when Tiger Woods won the event in 1990, he did it with a score of 145. It was better than scores from other Hogan Cup alumni that include notables Fred Couples, Scott Simpson, Robert Gamez, Kirk Triplett, and Peter Jacobsen.
The Hogan Cup 36-hole team matches pit the best junior golfers from the Western United States and Canada against each other in a team format with the three lowest scores each day determining the team total. Medals are awarded to the top three teams as well as the top three individuals in the field.
The event began in 1969 in commemoration of the vast achievements and contributions to the sport by Eddie Hogan, their long-time head golf professional who served the club from 1939 until his tragic drowning death in 1968. Hogan, an Oregon Amateur champion and PNGA Amateur Champion, was credited for transforming the role of the golf professional, developing what is now considered the standard for the green grass pro shop. Hogan was also dedicated in helping the Oregon Golf Association develop its widely-recognized junior golf program.
