COLUMBUS, Ind. — Zack Carrabine of Bargersville got off to a fast start this morning during the final round of the IGA Match Play Championship at Harrison Lake CC. Despite his loss of the first hole to opponent Vince Drahman of Noblesville, Carrabine won five of the next eight holes on the front nine to make the turn with a 4-up lead.
“My goal for today was to make the turn with a three shot lead, so being 4-up felt really good,” Carrabine said. “Vince started to make a tremendous comeback on the back nine, so I’m thankful that I had a four shot cushion.”
Drahman made his best attempt to close the gap, carding four birdies in his last nine holes, but Carrabine never relinquished his lead. The match ended on the par-5, 18th where Carrabine made a long birdie putt and won 1-up.
“This win really means a lot to me,” Carrabine said. “It means I’m no longer just a good junior player, but I’m starting to make the transition into playing well in amateur events.”
Earlier this summer, Carrabine's high school team, Center Grove, finished runner-up at the IHSAA State Championship. During the Match Play Semi-Finals Carrabine faced Timmy Hildebrand, a member of Westfield High School's State Championship Team. Carrabine defeated Hildebrand 4 and 3 to grab a place in the final match.
“Timmy and I have played golf together since we were six years-old,” Carrabine said. “We played great at State, but Westfield played better. Getting a win against Timmy was kind of like regaining a little bit of Center Grove pride.”
Carrabine will attend Butler University this fall and will join the Men's Golf Team.
“I kind of had a chip on my shoulder coming into the week. I have to play my way on to the Butler team, so I really wanted to have a good showing at this event. Hopefully this win helps a bit.”
