HORSESHOE BAY, Texas — Mason Greenberg’s final round of the 89th
Texas State Junior Championship presented by Merrill Lynch was a
victory lap more than anything else. After carding the first-ever
competitive 7-under-par 64 at Ram Rock on Thursday, Greenberg merely
needed to show up and stay out of trouble in his final round.
He did just that, carding a 1-over-par 72 to capture his first Legends
Junior Tour victory. Greenberg’s round was not as flawless as it was
Thursday, but it was more than enough to capture the Felix McKnight
Trophy.
The Legends Junior Tour’s Texas State Junior Championship presented by
Merrill Lynch is one of the oldest and most prestigious state
championships in the country. This was the sixth consecutive year
Horseshoe Bay Resort has hosted the event. The Boys 15-18 division
played Ram Rock all six years the Championship has been hosted by the
resort.
The 18-year-old Greenberg was glad to finally get a win in a tournament
as big as the Texas State Junior Championship.
“I had finished second in quite a few tournaments over the past several
years,” the Vanderbilt commit said. “It was really nice to finally put it all
together and get a win as big as this.”
It didn’t start out perfect for Greenberg though in his final round. He
made a 6-foot bogey on the par-4 third hole.
“I hadn’t hit the ball well the first few holes, but I made a huge bogey
putt on No.3 that got my confidence back. I would have only been up
three strokes had I missed that. I then made a great par save at the
fourth hole.”
Greenberg cruised from there, making two birdies and two bogeys the
rest of the way. His final round 1-over 72 was his only round over par all
week. It didn’t matter, he was ecstatic.
There were two, 4-under 67’s in Friday’s final round. They vaulted both
players way up the leaderboard. Madisonville’s Sam Bennett finished in a
tie for second place after his 4-under 67, vaulting him from 12th place.
Bennett finished tied with Pryce Beshoory, who shot a 1-over 72.
The second 4-under 67 belonged to future SFA Lumberjack, Zack
Hayward. He finished tied for fourth place with Justin Thompson.
Thompson struggled Friday, posting a 6-over 77, but it was still enough to
capture a top-five finish.
The field was cut to the low 45 and ties after Thursday’s second round.
That yielded 49 players for the final round at Horseshoe Bay’s Ram Rock
course.
