Garrett Rank
NEW GLASGOW, Nova Scotia — The Canadian Mid-Amateur defending champion jumped out to a four-shot lead on Tuesday at Abercrombie Country Club in Nova Scotia. Garrett Rank fired five-under 65, making no bogeys on his day, to lead Garth Collings and Tyler Wright by four.
Day two brought a bit of struggles for Rank, but at two-under par 138 through 36 holes, he continues to lead the event — now by three strokes.
Rank's three-over 73 on Wednesday was characterized by a double-bogey on the second hole of the day, concluding in a three-over 39 on the front side. Rank made another double at 10, but fought back with three straight birdies to eventually shoot even on the inward nine and post 73.
“I was pretty good off the tee today,” said Rank of his opening-round 65. “I got it in play and gave myself a lot of chances. I hit a few close and then hit a few really good wedge shots. I tried to give myself as many opportunities as I could from 15 feet all day.”
Rank, the talented Canadian who continues to compete in high-level amateur events as a mid-amateur, finished in a tie for first in the 2014 event with Rob Couture of Texas, defeating him in a playoff for the championship. Rank recently tied for second at the Canadian Amateur, won by former Clemson golfer Billy Kennerly.
Collings and Wright posted 69 and were tied for second place after Tuesday's round, which put them four back of Rank with three rounds to go. Collings remains four back after a 73 of his own in round two, while Wright carded 79 and fell back into a tie for 19th.
Sitting in a tie for second place are Glenn Robinson and 2012 and 2013 Canadian Mid-Amateur winner Kevin Carrigan, both of whom have rounds of 72 and 69 under their belt.
Wednesday's cut fell at 16-over, with 78 players advancing to the final two rounds at 15-over par or better.
