Tommy Brennan jumps to Louisiana Senior lead
LAKE CHARLES, La. — Friday was “Moving Day” at the Louisiana Senior Amateur Championship and Tommy Brennan of Covington skyrocketed to the top of the leaderboard after firing a seven-under par 65 at Lake Charles Country Club. Brennan’s 65 was the low round of the tournament so far by three strokes. He’s currently at seven under par 137 for the Championship and takes a three shot lead over Gayle Sanchez of Baton Rouge and Bill Stevens of Lake Charles into the final round. Sanchez and Stevens both shot a one-under par 71 on Friday and are four-under par for the Championship.

Brennan, a member of Tchefuncta Country Club, is a seven-time LGA Mid-Amateur Champion, and he finished runner-up in this Championship in 2011. Brennan started his round tied for 9th after carding a first round even par. He teed off at noon and started with a par at the par 5 1st hole. He played his next six holes three-under par, making birdies on holes 2, 4, and 7, and pars on holes 3, 5, and 6. He stumbled on the par 4 8th hole, the shortest par 4 on the golf course (304 yards) but one that has a green surrounded by a water hazard. He bounced back with a par on the par 4 9th hole, making the turn at two-under par 34.

Brennan started his back nine the same way that he started the front, with a par. He then caught fire with a string of three’s on the next three holes. Brennan eagled the par 5 11thhole and made back-to-back birdies on the par 4 12th and the par 4 13th holes. He made his second bogey of the day at the par 3 14th hole. He responded with a par-birdie-par-birdie finish on the final four holes, bringing his back nine total to 31.

There are nine total players under par thru 36 holes. There were a total of twelve scores under par on Friday. Other scores under par were shot by: Michael Willem of New Orleans (68/142), Billy Gabbert of Sulphur (68/142), 2009 and 2012 Champion Doug Farr of Monroe (69/143), 2003 Champion Eddie Lyons of Shreveport (69/141), Bret Pinson of Baton Rouge (71/141), Scott Haynie of Brusly (71/145), John Justus of Baton Rouge (71/149), Bill Land of Lafayette (71/149), and Chad Soileau of Ville Platte (71/150).

The shot of the day went to Brad Mosing of Lafayette who holed out for eagle from 108 yards on the par 4 12th hole. Mosing was playing in Brennan’s group, and his eagle came on the next hole after Brennan’s eagle.

As previously mentioned, this year’s Championship is being held at Lake Charles Country Club. Friday was another gorgeous day for golf, with temperatures reaching the upper 80s, a slight breeze and little to no humidity. The golf course drew rave reviews from this field of the top Senior players in Louisiana. The Lake Charles Country Club course played to a par of 72 at approximately 6,577 yards on Thursday. Friday’s play will begin at 7:30 AM off #1 tee, with the leaders going off last at 10:21 AM. The field in the Overall Championship was cut to the low 60 and ties after second round play. The cut was 165 and exactly 60 players made it.

The LGA also conducts a Super Senior Championship for those competitors 65 years of age and older. Super Seniors played from a forward set of tees at approximately 6.013 yards. Glenn Granger of Sulphur won the Super Senior Championship at six-under par 138 after firing a 68 in the first round and a 70 in the second round. Granger, a member of Lake Charles CC, was playing with a heavy heart this week as his close friend Lud Reed recently passed away. Granger, who played collegiately for Army, dedicated his victory to Reed. Rounding out the top 3 in the Super Senior Division are: 2.) Sid Bradley of Lake Charles (142) and 3.) Frank Brame of Alexandria (145).
