DeChambeau named SGA Amateur-of-the-Month once again
Bryson DeChambeau
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Capping off an incredible summer, SMU rising senior golfer Bryson DeChambeau was named today winner of the Southern Golf Association’s National Amateur of the Month Award for August. It was the second time this summer he won the award, the first coming in June after taking the NCAA individual title. Now he wins it again after becoming only the fifth player in history to win the NCAA title and U.S. Amateur title in the same year.
DeChambeau stormed through the U.S. Am at Olympia Fields C.C. outside Chicago, punctuated by his dominant 7&6 winning margin in the 36-hole finale against Virginia’s Derek Bard. In between, he finished fourth in both the storied 109th Southern Am and the star-studded Pacific Coast Amateur in July. Thus he finished first, fourth, fourth and first in the four most prestigious U.S. amateur events this summer.
Next week, he will compete on the U.S. team in the Walker Cup Matches at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in England. The physics major has said he will return to SMU to start his senior season, but is undecided on when he plans to turn pro.
DeChambeau was selected unanimously by the award’s blue-chip national panel of golf coaches, officials and media. Other winners so far this year were Scottie Scheffler, Beau Hossler, Emma Talley and Jordan Niebrugge. The 13-year-old award, open to males and females in all age groups, runs March-through-October and is one of the many ways the SGA supports and enhances amateur golf.
