CANONSBURG, Pa. — Sean Knapp captured the 30th Western Pennsylvania Mid-Amateur Championship on Thursday at Southpointe Golf Club, posting 5-under par 103 for 27 holes.

The championship, typically scheduled to consist of 36 holes during one day, was shortened to just 27 due to heavy rains that drenched the course later in the afternoon round. Knapp trailed first-round leader Mitch Mercer by a stroke with a 70, then went ahead and made three birdies on the front nine of his afternoon round before play was suspended, and further cancelled.

Mercer, after a morning 69, made no birdies on his third nine of the day, and made a devastating double-bogey on the par-5 sixth. He settled for a second place finish at 1-under 107.

Rick Stemmel took third place at even-par, while Eric Poplowski and four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Nathan Smith tied for fourth at 2-over.
