Pete Williams wins in playoff at Palm Beach County Senior
Pete Williams
TEQUESTA, Fla. — Former champions Pete
Williams of Juno Beach
and Mark Rubin of Coconut Creek were age
group playoff winners
Sunday in the 36th annual Palm Beach County
Senior Amateur at
the Turtle Creek Club.
Williams birdied the first extra hole, reaching
the green in two and
two-putting from 60 feet at the par-5 first hole
to edge Mike Weeks
of Jupiter after they tied at three under par 141
in the senior
division for players 50-59 years old.
Rubin outlasted Nelson DeBow of Port St. Lucie
by winning the
fourth extra hole with birdie. After they tied at
one over 145, Rubin
and DeBow matched pars at the first, ninth and
first holes before
the super seniors flight for ages 60-69 ended at
the par-4 second
on Rubin’s 20 footer.
In the Legends flight for players 70 and older,
Terry Louis of Palm
Beach Gardens shot 162, closing with 78 on four
birdies, six bogeys
and two double bogeys. It was the only score
under 80 among the
four contestants.
It was Williams’ second Senior Amateur title, the
first coming in
2011 at Old Trail. A United Airlines pilot,
Williams, 56, now has 19
Palm Beach County Golf Association wins since
2009. In regulation,
he had 16 pars, bogeyed the 11th hole, then
birdied the 17th to
make up two strokes on Weeks.
Rubin claimed his third Senior Amateur title, all
in playoffs, and he
has five PBCGA victories since 2005. He won on
the fourth playoff
hole in 2005 at Hobe Sound and on the first
extra hole last year at
Pine Tree.
Next on the PBCGA tournament schedule: Sept.
26-27. Bobby
Bryant Mid-Senior, Quail Ridge CC.
