COTO DE CAZA, Calif. — On an unusually rainy Southern California afternoon, Jim Knoll and Jeff Burda conquered Coto de Caza Golf Club with a bogey-free 7-under 65 to surge into the lead and win by one at the Southern California Senior Four-Ball Championship.
Knoll, this year's Northern California Senior Match Play winner from Sunnyvale, and Burda, of La Quinta, teamed up to make five straight birdies to end their front nine en route to their winning round. Andy Horner and Jeffrey Thomas led after day one with 65, as Knoll and Burda lurked one stroke back at 66.
The Horner/Thomas duo couldn't get anything going during Tuesday's final nine holes as they went even-par to shoot 68 and take third place, two shots back.
Jeff Johnston and Craig Steinberg of Agoura Hills shot the lowest round of the tournament — 64 — on Tuesday to jump into second place.
