REHOBOTH, R.I. — Mike Soucy said something
Tuesday after finishing play in the first
round of the 57th Rhode Island Senior Amateur
Championship at Crestwood that no one
else in the field could say. Actually, very few
players all season have been able to make
the same proclamation as Soucy.
"No bogeys,’’ Soucy responded when anyone
asked how his day went.
What made it even better was that Soucy’s work
also included four birdies. His 67 gave
him a two-stroke lead over Dave McNally
heading into Wednesday’s finale.
Soucy has his name on a bunch of RIGA
hardware. He is a three-time State Amateur
Champion (1999, 2001, 2003) and combined with
Paul Quigley to win the Senior Four-
Ball in 2010. A player known much more for
being precise than being a big hitter, Soucy
spoke more about saving par than the four
birdies he made.
"I had to make six and seven footers for par on
the first three holes,’’ he related. "Then,
on 17, I chipped in (to save par).’’
In between, "I started hitting some good shots,’’
he added. His birdies, all on putts in the
8-10 foot range, came at 4, 6, 7 and 14, all par-
4s.
The player closest to him, McNally, has been
playing consistently well in the second half
of the season. The Quinnatisset member was
unable to play in the heart of the season
because of tendinitis problems in his hand.
"It’s been going good since I came back,’’ he
said. Most recently, he contended in the
Mid-Amateur Championship at Ledgemont. He
finished in a tie for second in the Senior
Division in that one at 147, one behind the
winner, George Pirie. Pirie is the reigning
champion in the Senior Amateur, but is not
competing at Crestwood because he is
sidelined after undergoing surgery recently.
