CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The four-way tie at the top of the leaderboard after round one stayed tight all day as Bob Desjardins from Mathews made two clutch putts on the final two holes to capture his second CGA Championship.
Desjardins was three down to first round co-leader Bob Yow heading to the back nine but shot one-under to complete the comeback.
Desjardins on his mentality on the comeback, “I didn’t do anything different, just kept my head down and tried to hit some good shots.”
Desjardins, Yow, and first round co-leader Charlie Parks were all tied heading to the 17th hole.
“I made a huge putt on #17 and I knew I was one up then."
But Charlie Parks had a makeable birdie putt to tie but he missed. Desjardins still had to roll in a eight foot putt for par to seal the win.
“I feel very fortunate to win, these guys are all good players,” Desjardins on winning his second CGA championship.
Defending champion Ron Carpenter from Creedmoor did not go down quietly. He posted an three-under par round of 69 and finished one shot behind in a tie for second.
