DALLAS, Texas — Individual NCAA golf champion Bryson DeChambeau will not have the opportunity to defend his title next May in Eugene, Ore., thanks to NCAA penalties resulting from mistakes by ex-coach Josh Gregory, who resigned in early August of 2014. Among other penalties, SMU has been banned from postseason play.
"The program is disappointed by the news," SMU head coach Jason Enloe told Golfweek in September. "We have a great group of young men that have had a couple nice runs in the NCAA the last couple of years. We are heartbroken that we won’t have another opportunity."
Yesterday SMU officials confirmed that DeChambeau was no longer a part of the team, and DeChambeau made a statement on The Golf Channel to inform everyone of his intentions.
“To best prepare myself for the next six months of competition and future events, I felt it was appropriate to make the decision now to be fair to my coached and team,” he said.
DeChambeau is planning on playing in the Argentina Open and Australian Open coming up in November, according to The Golf Channel. His win at the U.S. Amateur gave him exemptions to the first three majors of next year — the Masters, U.S. Open, and the British Open.
