Samuel Uhland posts 66 on day one of St. Augustine Amateur
Samuel Uhland
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. β The 2015 St. Augustine Amateur Tournament kicked off Friday morning at St. Johns Golf Club. Jacksonville University freshman Samuel Uhland carded a 4-under par 66 on day one and is out to an early one-stroke lead. Uhland, a native of Jacksonville, made his first bogey of the day at the par-3 11th, but rebounded nicely with an eagle at the par-5 12th to keep the solid opening round going.
Three players are tied for second place at 67, including James Yoon of Paraguay, Sebastian Barnoya of Guatemala, and Paul McClure of Mobile, Alabama.
Notable players in the field include 2016 Clemson University commit Bryson Nimmer and 2015 New York State Amateur champion Trevor Sluman, who graduated from the University of Louisville in May. Both players struggled in the first round, with Sluman posting 74 and Nimmer shooting 75.
Tournament director Wes Tucker says this year's group of players may be the one of the most impressive fields he's seen.
βItβs such a strong field this year,β Tucker told the St. Augustine Record. "I think we are going to break the 5-under total for three days."
Twelve players are under-par through the first 18 holes, with the leader Uhland just a stroke behind the 54-hole record with two rounds to go. It certainly looks like the 2015 champion may be heading home with a trophy, and a tournament record on Sunday afternoon.
Reigning champion Edward Richardson of England, who won in 2014 as a 46-year-old, is not in this year's field.
