James Yoon
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Day two of the St. Augustine Amateur Tournament saw a bogey-free round from former Cal golfer James Yoon catapult him up the leaderboard into a two-stroke lead entering the final round.
Yoon, a native of Paraguay, made six birdies during the second round at St. Johns Golf Club to card 64. He trailed first round leader Samuel Uhland, a true freshman at Jacksonville University, by a stroke after 18 holes.
Uhland had a similar round on Saturday, making a par-5 eagle and three birdies, but added one more bogey to his second round and posted 67. He sits in second place and will join Yoon and Mobile, Alabama's Paul McClure in the final group.
Notable players in the field heading into the event included 2016 Clemson University commit Bryson Nimmer and 2015 New York State Amateur champion Trevor Sluman, who graduated from the University of Louisville in May. Both players struggled in the first round, with Sluman posting 74 and Nimmer shooting 75. But in the second round, Sluman got back into the tournament with 65 and is now tied for fifth place, though he sits eight back of the lead.
Tournament director Wes Tucker says this year's group of players may be the one of the most impressive fields he's seen.
“It’s such a strong field this year,” Tucker told the St. Augustine Record. "I think we are going to break the 5-under total for three days."
Through the first round, 12 players were under-par, with the leader Uhland just a stroke behind the 54-hole record with two rounds to go. Now, Yoon is four ahead of the record, and it certainly looks like whoever wins on Sunday afternoon will have a tournament record to go along with their winning trophy.
Reigning champion Edward Richardson of England, who won in 2014 as a 46-year-old, is not in this year's field.
