Cal Bears extend Tavistock Collegiate Invitational lead
Collin Morikawa
WINDERMERE, Fla. — The University of California were not the lowest scorers on day two of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational, but they did manage to extend their five-shot, opening-round lead to nine through 36 holes.
Playing Isleworth Country Club on a day that was much more difficult for scoring than Sunday, Cal posted 2-over par 290 after going 9-under in the first round. The lowest team total on Monday went to Florida, who rebounded from a 15-over par first day to shoot 289 and climb the leaderboard into eighth place.
The Golden Bears are still being paced by true freshman Collin Morikawa, who leads the individual race by one over Arizona State's Max Rotluff by a stroke. Morikawa, the 2015 Trans-Miss winner from La Canada Flintridge, Calif., posted 70 on day two for a 36-hole total of 137. Rotluff, a senior from Germany, matched Morikawa's 70 on Monday after an opening 68.
South Carolina, who sat in second place through 18 holes, shot the second highest team round of the day (310) to drop all the way back to a tie for ninth place — 25 shots off the lead.
New second-place holders Illinois are being led by solid performances thus far from Dylan Meyer (T4) and Nick Hardy (T7).
The defending champion Florida State Seminoles are not in the field this year, as they chose to play in the U.S. Collegiate Tournament, which concluded Sunday afternoon at The Golf Club of Georgia. Florida State finished five strokes back in fourth place.
