Doug Hanzel fires 66 on day two of "The Vinny" looking to defend title
Doug Hanzel
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Playing not far from where he lives in Savannah, Ga., a hotbed for golf not only in the southeast, but in the entire United States, 2013 U.S. Senior Amateur winner Doug Hanzel fired a 66 on day two of "The Vinny" to grab a share of the 36-hole lead with Jack Hall.
Hall, also of Savannah, will join the defending champion Hanzel in Monday's final group after rounds of 74 and 69 put him at 143, as well.
Saturday's opening round featured a tough day of scoring on the Deer Creek Course at The Landings Club, as a pair of 73s from Walter Todd and Stephen Sharpe led through the first round. But there were 10 rounds better than 73 on Sunday and players scuffled for position entering the last day.
Trailing the leaders by a stroke is Daniel Cook of The Woodlands, Texas at 74-70, while fellow Texan Bob Kearney, of Houston, has rounds of 74 and 71 in the books to sit two strokes back.
In the Super Senior division, Frank Wrenn and Phil Pavoni are deadlocked at 148, with Frank Costanzo and Taylor Adams two behind at 150.
