Gifford Collegiate: Washington runs away with title
Corey Pereira
CARLSBAD, Calif. — Corey Pereira and Chris Babcock led the Washington Huskies to a nine-stroke victory at La Costa Resort on Wednesday. Tying for first place individually, the two players were crucial in Washington's win at the UCLA-hosted Gifford Collegiate Tournament, extending their lead over second-place finishing Stanford on the event's final day.
Cardinal superstar Maverick McNealy helped his team to the runner-up finish thanks to a final-round 67, which put him in a share of the individual title at 4-under 209 alongside Pereira and Babcock.
Washington got out to their slim second second-round lead thanks to a stellar team score of 9-under par 275 on Tuesday. And despite shooting 11 strokes higher in the final round, the Huskies won easily while being just one of three teams on the last day to shoot below 290.
Frank Garber tied for fifth place for Washington, shooting 1-under 212. The remaining players, Jonathan Sanders and Carl Yuan, placed inside the top-30.
San Diego State took third place with T8 finishes from Riccardo Michelini and 2014 U.S. Amateur champion Gunn Yang. The host and defending champions UCLA grabbed fourth place, and were led by a fourth place individual finish from Jonathan Garrick.
