DeChambeau, T14, paces ams at Australian Open
Bryson DeChambeau
SYDNEY, Australia -- Bryson DeChambeau is enjoying his journey Down Under.
Just last week he finished T2 at the Australian Masters, calling himself and "amateur intern" trying to gain experience in the professional ranks.
Today at the Australian Golf Club, DeChambeau posted 1-over 72 for a 36-hole total of even par 142. He stands seven shots behind leader Matt Jones, and 3 back of World No. 1 Jordan Spieth.
The round had plenty of birdies (5) including back-to-back runs at Nos. 9 and 10 as well as 13 and 14. But six bogeys on the card over the lengthy course.
Three other amateurs made the cut: Australian Ryan Ruffels, American Jordan Niebrugge (right on the number after recovering from a rough start) and Yu Chan-An of Taiwan.
DeChambeau, the U.S. Amateur and NCAA individual champion, left SMU in the fall after the school was hit with sanctions that eliminated his possibility of returning to defend the NCAA title. He is currently third ranked amateur in the world by GolfWeek/AmateurGolf.com and World Golf Rankings, while Scratch Players has him at No. 1, likely due to a higher emphasis on pro finishes.
Goif Channel is broadcasting the tournament in prime time -- Saturday's third round can be watched live starting 8:00pm EST/5:00pm PST on Friday.
