The Seaver Cup
LA QUINTA, Calif. (Dec. 10, 2015) -- The SCGA is looking for some revenge as it takes the course at Rancho La Quinta CC this Thursday and Friday at the 9th Seaver Cup. The last time the two teams pitted against each other in 2013, the team from up North dominated, coming away with a 33.5-14.5 victory. It was the NCGA's second victory in a row.
Created in 1998 at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa as a biennial competition that brings together the best players from Northern and Southern California, the Seaver Cup is named in honor of the late Charles Seaver.
One of the legends of California amateur golf, Seaver is one of only two amateurs to hold the NCGA, SCGA and California Amateur titles at the same time, accomplishing the feat in 1933-34 (the other player to complete the Golden State Slam was George Von Elm in 1925). There’s also the Seaver legacy between the NCGA and SCGA. Seaver’s father, Everett, served as SCGA President in 1928. Seaver himself, meanwhile, served as NCGA President in 1980.
On the course, the Cup utilizes a format similar to the Ryder Cup – three points are available for each match, one point for the front nine, one point for the back nine and one point for the overall match (any matches that are halved earn a 1/2 point).
The event will kick-off Thursday morning with four-ball matches, before afternoon foursome matches. Friday will feature singles matches and an eventual champion is crowned. Overall, the SCGA and NCGA each have three Seaver Cup victories, with two ties.
