LA QUINTA, Calif. — The NCGA continued its recent run of dominating its neighbors from the Southland.
After taking a big lead early, team NCGA was on its game again, claiming its third straight title in the Seaver Cup with a 44-28 over Team SCGA on another sunny day at Rancho La Quinta Country Club.
With the win, the NCGA takes a 4-3-2 lead in the bi-annual event, which is played in honor of late California amateur great Charles Seaver.
Holding a 21.5-14.5 lead after Thursday’s opening rounds, the NCGA just kept the pedal to the metal, winning Friday’s Singles Front-Nine, 6.5-5.5. The NCGA went on to win the Singles Back-Nine, 8.5-3.5, and also claimed a 7.5-4.5 win in Singles Overall.
The Cup utilizes a format similar to the Ryder Cup– three points are available for each match, one point for the front nine, one point for the back nine and one point for the overall match (any matches that are halved earn a 1/2 point).
2015 NCGA Player of the Year Nick Moore again swept each portion of his match, defeating Joe Doody, 5 and 3. Also sweeping was five-time reigning NCGA Senior Player of the Year Jim Knoll, who finished with a 5 and 4 win over Jeff Burda.
Also tallying three points for the NCGA was Ben Peters.
Seaver is one of only two amateurs to hold the NCGA, SCGA and California Amateur titles at the same time, accomplishing the feat in 1933-34 (the other player to complete the Golden State Slam was George Von Elm in 1925. Seaver’s father, Everett, served as SCGA President in 1928. Seaver himself, meanwhile, served as NCGA President in 1980.
