Christopher Tuulik Captures AGC San Diego Am
Champion Christopher Tuulik
CARLSBAD, Calif. — UNLV Junior Chris Tuulik has won the AmateurGolf.com San Diego Amateur, presented by Callaway Golf and hosted by Aviara Golf Club.
Tuulik entered the final round trailing Clay Feagler by three shots. After getting off to a rough start, Tuulik crawled his way back and found himself one shot back of co-leaders Feagler and Justin Chong heading into the menacing 18th hole.
Unphased by the water looming along the right side, Tuulik found the fairway off the tee and hit his iron to 20 feet.
"Playing with Clay, I knew I needed to make it to have a chance," said Tuulik.
Tuulik drained his putt and joined Feagler and Chong in the playoff with the momentum clearly on his side.
In the playoff, Chong found the water off the tee. Feagler joined him in the drink with his approach, while Tuulik was on the green in regulation with three putts from 20 feet for the win. Tuulik left his first putt short and decided to add a little drama by missing his par-putt.
Fortunately, bogey was good enough to get the job done as Tuulik joined last week's champion and fellow La Jolla high school golfer Ben Doyle in the amateurgolf.com winner's circle.
In the Senior division, Steve Donnelly of Salinas, Calif. fired a final round 72 to edge first round leader John Hoffman by one shot. Donnelly's 72 was the 2nd best round of the day out of all the gross divisions. With high winds and slick greens, that is a great round by Donnelly.
The Net division was won by Ty Jacob who fired a final round 70 to come from seven shots behind first-round leader Richard McDaniel.
The women's title was claimed by Duvell, Wash. native Sarah Lawrence. Lawrence shot rounds of 71 and 76 which is very impressive considering she is only a senior in high school.
