Senior Flight Leader Jeff Britton
PEBBLE BEACH, California (December 19, 2015) – Early morning rains gave way to afternoon sunshine at the opening round of the Amateurgolf.com Tour Championship hosted by Poppy Hills Golf Club.
Leading the way is Cal Berkeley Junior Clayton Madey who opened with a 2-under-par 69. Madey, from West Linn, Ore., was playing the course blind and relied on lines from his playing partners as well as a controlled fade with his driver to keep his ball in good position off the tee.
Asked what his shot of the day was, Madey replied, “My tee shot on 15. I visualize all my shots and absolutely destroyed a 5-iron and it ended up 30 yards long of the green. I made bogey.”
For the most part, however, Madey’s good shots would be rewarded as was the case on the par-5 9th hole, his final hole of the day. Madey had to cut a 5-iron 40 yards around the right trees to a green with trouble short and left. This time he had the distance judged perfectly, landing the shot 15 feet from the pin and two-putting for an easy birdie.
Madey will take a one-shot lead into the final round over Foothill High School Junior Alexander Chin. Chin played very steady all day and had it not been for three-putts on his final two greens, he’d be in the lead. Sitting three-shots behind are Ryan Han, Coley Madey, Jerry Ledzinski, and Tanner Hughes who each carded rounds of 72.
Also firing an impressive 72 was Jeff Britton who, after not warming up beforehand, holed his 2nd shot for eagle on his opening hole. Britton holds a 13-shot lead in the senior division and also has a chance to catch Dale Bouguennec in the AGC Senior Points standings. Britton currents sits in 2nd place in the standings and will presumably choose not to warm up before tomorrow’s final round.
Korsen Yu of San Jose, Calif. opened with 73 and leads the Net division by three shots over Steve Poletti and AGC Net Points leader Chris Ladd.
