TUSCON, AZ – Cal is in third place following the opening day of action Friday at the Arizona Intercollegiate being hosted by Arizona at the par-71, 7262-yard Sewailo Golf Club. All 16 teams in the field had players on the back nine of the second round when the action was suspended due to darkness. Washington (-9) will be in the lead when play continues at 7:30 am MT/6:30 am PT on Saturday morning followed by Texas (-7) and Cal (+3).

Cal moved up two spots and shaved three strokes off the number the Bears trailed the Huskies by shooting five-under par during the second round prior to the suspension of play. The Bears shot an opening round eight-over par 292 and were tied for fourth place 15 strokes off the pace set by Washington after the first 18 holes.

“We definitely got off to a very slow start but we stabilized after the first five or six holes and then held pretty steady the rest of the day,” head coach Steve Desimone said. “We’re behind a couple of pretty good teams, but we’re still within striking distance. I’m disappointed because should be a lot closer. Twelve shots is a lot to make up on good teams but not impossible.”

Shotaro Ban and Collin Morikawa are tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard after the first day of action at two-under par and six strokes behind co-leaders Frank Garber of Washington and Beau Hossler of Texas at eight-under par.

“It was great to get back into the rhythm of things and start off the spring,” Morikawa said. “My day was pretty steady even though I had two doubles in the round. Overall, my game today wasn’t great, but I was able to take advantage of when I put myself in the right spots. As a team, I thought we started off slow and took some time getting into playing our own games. With the many mistakes we all gave away, we’re all ready for tomorrow and to try and put ourselves back into contention.”
