Senior champs Charles Richesin and Mitch Harrison
PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. (March 6, 2016) -- Father and Son team Jack and Jason Anthony won the overall title today at the Monterey Bay Four-Ball.
The tournament is played at the beloved Pacific Grove Golf Links, and today the reasons we love it were on full display. After 1 1/2 inches of rain and high winds the night before, the sun broke through early. Most of the sand-based fairways at "The Poor Man's Pebble Beach" were dry, especially on the back nine where players stared.
The Anthony duo fired 65 in the first round to take the midway lead.
On Sunday it was game on.
With two time defending champs along side to add a little pressure, the Anthony's poured on the birdies -- Jack giving his son all the credit.
"He was a birdie machine," he said.
"Maybe, but it was my dad that birdied our last hole [the 11th]," said Jason, who will play with Randy Haag in the U.S. Four-Ball at Winged Foot, after qualifying in December at Poppy Hills.
The Anthony's final round score 8-under 62 gave them a two round total of 13-under 127, 3 shots clear of Britton and Ledzsinski, who fired 10-under 130 to finish solo second. Andy Nevin and Dom De Bellis posted 134 for third place.
SENIOR AND NET DIVISIONS
Charles Richesin picked up another AmateurGolf.com victory today. His last was at the Christmas Classic, which he won in December for the third time.
This weekend Richesin, of Lodi brought along another Central Valley player, Mitch Harrison (Acampo) and they teamed up for victory. Both players putted beautifully, whether for birdie or to save a key team par. After firing 5-under 65 (and surviving a rough patch of weather out on the Pacific holes) Richesin and Harrison went one better, posting 6-under 64 for a tournament total of 11-under 129.
Dan Bieber and Bob Fulton leveraged a final round of 7-under 63 to finish solo second, at 10-under 130.
First round leaders (and defending champs) Casey Boyns and Mark Miller shot 63-68 to finish tied for third with Wayne Bass and Michael Harding. Of note is the round posted Sunday by Bass and Harding. Their 9-under 61 sprung them up the leaderboard . It was the lowest round either days from any of the division.
Some other "209 area code" guys from Turlock that love coming to Monterey every chance they get, Charles Balisha and partner John Borrelli, won the Net Division at 10-under 130.
Finishing 3-shots back were the Balisha and Borelli' golf traveling mates, Tom Silva and Marc Sanders.
SPECIAL THANKS
To all the players for coming down to Monterey for another fun weekend, and to the entire staff at Pacific Grove Golf Links. If you haven't experienced it put Pacific Grove very high on your "must play" list.
