STATESBORO, GA (March 19, 2016)--No. 2 Auburn, looking for their second consecutive win, and Georgia State are tied for the lead after two rounds at the Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club (553). Auburn began the day in 12th place before shooting up the leader board, while Georgia State started the day in second place.
The Tigers were led by the strong play of Michael Johnson (-11), the medalist leader. A day after shooting a 68, Johnson a red shirt senior, posted a 7-under par 65 to jump into the lead. Johnson got off to a quick start with a birdie on No. 10, his opening hole of the day.
After a bogey on No. 11 Johnson was unblemished the rest of the day. He picked up four more birdies on his opening nine to get out the gates at 4-under par. Johnson played a quiet front nine until a birdie on the seventh. It was the first of three straight to finish his round.
Auburn has also received a strong showing from freshman Jacob Solomon (-6). The freshman is currently in a tie for ninth following a 67. Red shirt senior Jake Mondy (-4) has also played well and is tied for 21st.
Georgia State has moved into a tie for first thanks to three players in the overall top 10. Senior J.J. Gray (-10), tied for second, has paced the squad thus far. Gray tallied a 69 yesterday before matching Johnson with a 7-under 65. In the second round Gray didn’t card a bogey while posting five birdies and an eagle. Gray teed of on No. 1 and closed the front side eagle, birdie, birdie for a 31.
No. 13 Wake Forest (534) led after day one and now sits in third place. They are tied with No. 14 Vanderbilt. No. 17 North Carolina (539) is in fifth place.
First round individual leader, Wake Forest senior Davis Womble (-10) is tied with Gray in second place. Seven players will begin Sunday within four strokes of the lead.
ROUND ONE
No. 13 Wake Forest (270) holds a four stroke lead over a strong field at the completion of first round play at the Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club. No. 14 Vanderbilt and Georgia State currently are tied for second place (274).
Senior Davis Womble led Wake Forest in the first round with a tournament leading 8-under par 64. Womble was even after four but then put his round into over drive beginning with a birdie on five.
It was the beginning of a 5-under five hole stretch on holes five through nine. The highlight of the run was an eagle on the par-5 seventh. The senior completed his bogey free day with three more birdies on the back nine.
Four players will begin the second round two back at 6-under par. In all 19 players are just four behind.
No. 17 North Carolina and Iowa are tied for fourth (279) place to cap the top five. No. 2 Auburn (284) currently sits in 12th place. The Tigers are in a similar position as last week when they came from behind to win the Seminole Invitational.
