SANTA CRUZ, CA (April 13, 2016)--On the same day that Stanford's Maverick McNealy and Oregon's Aaron Wise were named to the
Ben Hogan semifinalist list the duo duked it out on the course blowing the rest of the field out of the water. Wise the leader after the first two rounds began the final day of the Western Intercollegiate a stroke ahead of McNealy. The lead didn't last long as McNealy shot his second consecutive 6-under-par 64 at the Pasatiempo Golf Club and won by three.
McNealy posted three day scores of 66-64-64 and finished 16-under-par earning his fourth win of the year. Like yesterday McNealy bogeyed just one hole as he birdied five and eagled another. McNealy went on a torrid stretch during holes 6-10, going 5-under during the five hole stanza, including his eagle on the par-5 9th. The Stanford junior began on No. 1 and parred the first five holes before catching fire.
Sophomore Aaron Wise (-13) tried to keep pace and played well on the final day shooting a 3-under-par 67. Wise playing with McNealy eagled No. 6 a 565 yard par-5 to extend his lead but bogeys on No's. 8 and 10 while McNealy surged proved costly. Despite falling behind Wise continued to battle on the back nine making birdies on 13 and 14. It wasn't quite enough, however, as McNealy proved too tough to beat.
McNealy and Wise played so well during the 54-hole event that the next closest finisher was Washington junior Corey Pereira (-3) in third and a very distant 13-stokes off the lead. Four players finished T4 at 2-under-par. Jon Rahm (-1) was also a named a Ben Hogan semifinalist and he finished T8. Rahm is looking to become the first back-to-back winner of the award.
The final round also saw No. 7 Stanford (1,041) take control of the team battle and win by 10. After McNealy for Stanford came a T8 from sophomore Franklin Huang (-1) and senior David Boote (E) finished T12 to round out the group of Cardinals inside the top-15.
No. 4 USC (1,051) was able to move into second place during the final round thanks to an impressive three players finishing T4 at 2-under-par. The trio was comprised of junior Rico Hoey, sophomore Jonah Texeira and senior Andrew Levitt.
First round leader Oregon (1,059) ended up in third while No. 18 California (1,062) was fourth and Pepperdine (1,065) placed fifth.
