GREAT FALLS, VA (May 6, 2016) - Heavy rain in Northern Virginia Friday forced a suspension in play at the 51st VSGA Four-Ball Stroke Play Championship at River Bend Golf & Country Club.
The first round will resume Saturday at 7:30 a.m., with the second round, a double-tee start, to follow at approximately 9:30.
Only four of the 48 sides that began the day finished their rounds. Steady rain fell throughout the round, and a burst of heavy rain and wind at 1:15 p.m. forced a suspension of play. Though River Bend’s greens held up marvelously during the deluge, standing water on several fairways and the threat of more rain later in the afternoon were key factors in the decision to suspend.
Adam Horton and Tyler Gulliksen (Elizabeth Manor G&CC), who will play together later this month in the USGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Winged Foot, were among the four sides that finished. The siren blew while they were playing No. 18 and they decided to finish out the hole so they didn’t have to come back early for the restart.
“It’s just another round of golf, that’s how you have to look at it,” Gulliksen said. “It’s raining. It’s wet. The ball doesn’t go anywhere. You have to adjust to that. But otherwise … if you act like a baby about it, it’s going to affect you in other ways.”
Added Horton: “You have to realize everybody else is playing in it too. It’s not just you.” Horton and Gulliksen finished with a 2-over-par 73.
Through nine holes, three sides were tied atop the leaderboard at 2 under: Harold Dill III (South Riding GC) and Kyle Bailey (Roanoke CC); Vincent Nadeau (Spring Creek GC) and Brandon Grogan (Chatmoss CC); and Austin Gray (Stonehenge G&CC) and Ross Sumner (Quinton Oaks GC). Five other sides were at 1 under at the turn.
