CARMICHAEL, Calif. (May 29, 2016) -- Ben Corfee took advantage of perfect scoring conditions with a 2nd round 64 to take a four-shot lead at the Memorial Amateur.
With a 66 yesterday, Corfee's 36-hole total of 130 is the lowest in the tournament's history. The UC Davis senior looks to better his tie for 3rd place finish last year. He'll have to fend of UCLA's Tyler Collier who matched his 64 today and sits just four shots back at 134.
First-round co-leader Andrej Bevins sits in third after a second round 71 while defending champion Joshua Sedano is in 6th after a 6-under 66 for a 138 total.
The cut to the top 39 and ties fell at 147.
ROUND ONE STORY
Ben Corfee and Andrej Bevins lead the Memorial Amateur after rounds of 6-under 66 at Ancil Hoffman Golf Course.
Corfee, a rising senior at UC Davis, fired his 2nd 66 in a row, the first coming on Monday in his California State Am qualifier. The Davis native finished tied for third in this event last year and is on his way to improving that this year.
Bevins, a rising senior at University of New Mexico, also has success in this event, finishing in a tie for 5th last year. His opening round 66 was, "one of the best putting rounds I've ever witnessed" according to his playing partner and defending champion Joshua Sedano. Sedano opened with a steady even-par 72 himself.
Three more rounds in the 60s came from Ryan Knop, Kyle Davies, and Alex Lee who each opened with 3-under 69. The field will be cut to the low 39 and ties at the conclusion of tomorrow's round.
