Ben Corfee Cruises to Memorial Amateur Win
CARMICHAEL, Calif. (May 30, 2016) -- Ben Corfee capped off a wire-to-wire victory with a final-round 74 at the Memorial Amateur.
Corfee built up a six-shot lead entering the round over UCLA's Tyler Collier after posting a tournament record 36-hole total of 130 (14-under).
"I was trying to play as if I was two-shots behind," Corfee said. "It was inevitable that thoughts about my lead would enter my mind so I tried to keep my approach as simple as possible".
The UC Davis senior played very solid, and responded each time he felt pressure from his playing partners. Faced with a difficult 15 yard bunker shot on hole 8, he calmly holed it for birdied. A bogey on the difficult par 3, 9th was followed up by a two-putt birdie on the par-5 10th.
On the closing stretch, Corfee was very much in control, making pars and avoiding any big mistakes. He finished with a 2-over par 74 for a five-shot win over Andrej Bevins. This is Corfee's 2nd amateur win though first as an individual, having won the NCGA Four-ball with partner and caddie this week Scott Raber.
"I've been close a bunch of times to breaking through and I feel like I finally have this week," Corfee said of his week.
The round of the day was a 5-under 67 shot by Cole Chavez who jumped into a tie for 3rd with Fresno State's Alex Lee. Tyler Collier rounded out the top-5.
