Zach Hammond ties course record to win San Bernardino County Amateur
San Bernardino, CA (May 31, 2016) - Zach Hammond
shot a miraculous 10-under 60 in the final round of the
San Bernardino County Am on Monday. His stellar
round was good for his second victory in three years,
and a share of the course record at Riverside Golf
Club. Better yet? One of the players that owns a share
of that record is Hammond's father.
Anthony Perea came out of the gates strong on
Saturday, with an opening round of 64 to claim the
early lead. Despite being five shots back, Hammond
regained the 36 hole lead with a bogey free second
round score of 3-under 67. As the final round
progressed, it was lights out for the field. Hammond’s
play was near perfection as he pulled away from the
pack to win by 14 strokes.
The Press-Enterprise reported:
"His round was flawless, literally flawless,” [playing
partner] Blalock said.
“I think he hit one bad shot all day, the chip on 12.
Other than that he hit every shot where he wanted to
hit it.”
The 60 tied the San Bernardino Golf Club course record
already established by Hammond’s father and course
superintendent Sonny Hammond, Brandon Hillpot and
Tommy Moore Jr. All three of those golfers are former
County Am champs, but all of them accomplished their
feats during non-tournament rounds.
“Hey, I’ll take it,” Hammond said with a laugh. “After
the first round, I wasn’t expecting it.”
Next up for the former UC Riverside golfer is
a possible chance to qualify for the U.S. Open. He is
first alternate for the California sectional qualifier on
June 6th and hoping for a chance to compete.
Defending champion Ben Tolsma fired a final round 2-
over 72 to finish in fifth place, and first round leader
Anthony Perea would finish 2-under overall to claim
runner-up.
