NEW WASHOE CITY, NV (June 12, 2016) -- Notre Dame junior Jens Verhey shot a final round 2-over 74 to finish 5-over and win the Northern Nevada Amateur by one shot. Sean Goshert led after the first round at Thunder Canyon Golf Club, however he struggled during Sunday's final round shooting a 7-over 79 and finishing at 6-over in second place.
Verhey struggled down the stretch with three bogeys on the last six holes, including one on 18, but he was able to do enough earlier in the round to capture the title. The work that put Verhey over the top were birdies on Nos. 5 and 12 that offset a bogey on No. 7.
In the first round Verhey got off to a shaky start and was 4-over after his opening six holes. Three birdies on the way in eased the pain that came from bogeys on the last two holes. Verhey ended up signing for a first round 3-over 75.
Goshert's first round 71 was the only under-par round of the weekend and it was carded after a tally of four birdies and three bogeys. Unfortunately, the second round was a struggle for Goshert as he limped his way to a 7-over 43 on the front nine. Goshert battled back on the closing nine with a birdie and a bogey but it was to little to late.
Eric Larson (+7) finished third, Stephen Osborne II (+9) was fourth while Jacob Wilner (+10) and Jason Krueger (+10) shared fifth.
