COLUMBUS, OH (August 11, 2016) -- Once more the
time has come for the U.S. Senior Open and this years
field will include 23 amateurs. The group will be led by
Mike McCoy, the low
amateur each of the last two years.
"It's an honor to play well in this quality of
company," McCoy said following last years U.S. Senior
Open. "These guys you've admired your whole career,
they've done so much. It's a thrill. I'm glad that there's
room for the amateur in this championship."
McCoy, a 2015 Walker Cuper arrives at Scioto
Country Club with a long career of success in USGA
events, including capturing the 2013 U.S. Mid-Amateur.
The Des Moines, IA resident is a five-time Iowa
Amateur
champion and a Hall of Famer. McCoy has had strong
showings this year at the Coleman Invitational (T2) and
the George C. Thomas Invitational (3rd).
Some of the other top amateurs in the field include
2014 U.S. Senior Amateur winner Patrick Tallent of
Vienna,
VA and recent British Senior Amateur winner Chip Lutz of Reading, PA.
Tallent returns to the U.S. Senior Open after
recently finishing tied for eighth in his British Senior
Amateur title defense. Earlier this season, Tallent
finished tied third at the George L. Coleman Senior
Invitational.
When Lutz claimed the British Senior Amateur last
week, he became the sixth consecutive American to
win
the title. Lutz, the 2015 U.S. Senior Amateur winner,
was also victorious earlier this season at the George C.
Thomas Senior.
Of the 23 amateurs in the field, eight earned
qualifying medalist honors; Scott Vermeer, Dennis
Dachtler, Dave Bunker, Randy Haag, Don Walsworth,
Mike Bodney, James Kiely and Gene Elliott.

ABOUT THE
U.S. Senior Open
The U.S. Senior Open is one of 15 national
championships conducted by the USGA. Open
to amateurs and professionals who have
reached
their 50th birthday as of the first day of the
championship.
The Senior Open was
first
played in 1980 with a purse of, get this, just
$100,000. Roberto Vincenzo of Argentina was
the
inaugural champion (winning $20,000), and
Arnold
Palmer was a popular winner the following year
in
1981 at Oakland Hills.
