STUART, FL (August 14, 2016) -- Amateur Michael
Weeks of Jupiter, playing a group
ahead of the leaders, posted a bogey-free 67 and
tournament total of 6-under par for a one stroke
victory at the Florida Senior Open. The tournament was
contested at Belleair Country Club.
Lee Rinker, of Jupiter entered the final round with a
two-stroke lead over 2010 Florida Senior Open
Champion Gene Fieger, of Naples.
Fieger would be the first to tie for the lead after
birdieing the 1st and 3rd holes. However, Rinker would
quickly take the lead back with a birdie on No. 4.
Rinker played even par the rest of the way, and on
the final hole he placed his pitching wedge approach
shot 20-feet left
of the hole. It wasn't exactly the shot he was looking
for, but he still had a good look at birdie. The
former PGA Tour player narrowly missed the putt to tie
the amateur, Weeks. He finished at 5-under for the
championship, in a tie with fellow professional David
Good,
of Lakeland. Good, also playing in
the final group, birdied the final hole for a bogey-free
68, giving him a share of the low professional
purse.
Gene Fieger's final round 72 saw him again fall
short in his quest for a second title. He finished in solo
fourth.
Defending Champion, Eduardo Herrera, of
Windermere finished tied for seventh.
This is Weeks' second FSGA Championship, adding
to his 2011 FSGA Mid-Senior Championship he
captured
at his home club, Bear Lakes Golf & Country Club.
The 40th Florida Senior Open, conducted by the
Florida State Golf Association and South Florida PGA
Section saw over 300 players try to qualify over eight
qualifying sites across the state, setting a field of 78
amateur and 78 professionals who competed over 54-
holes at Willoughby Golf Club & Sailfish Point Golf Club
in Stuart.
