AMES, IA (August 24, 2016) -- For the second time in three years Gene Elliott has won the Iowa Senior Amateur. Elliott finished 7-under and six-strokes in front of Curtis Holck at Ames Golf and Country Club.
Elliott started the day three-strokes behind Jay Gregory but he got off to quick start with birdies on two of his first three holes to reach 5-under.
As Elliott made his move Gregory struggled with a double-bogey on the opening hole and then three more bogeys during the first five holes to drop from 6-under to 1-under.
Elliott made his one blemish on the 9th and turned in 1-under before finishing with a bogey-free 3-under 33 on the back nine to shoot a 4-under 67. The back nine included birdies on Nos. 11, 13 and 17.
Curtis Holck was the only other player to finish under-par as he finished 1-under and in second place.
Scott Briggs was third at even-par, Terry Cook at 1-over was fourth while Gregory fell to 2-over and fifth.
