SAN ANTONIO, TX (August 28, 2016) -- It took a playoff but in the end John Pierce was the last man standing at the San Antonio Senior. Pierce and Chuck Ellenwood both finished 54-holes tied at 7-under before Pierce prevailed at Brackenridge Park, part of the Alamo City Golf Trail.
Pierce fired a 3-under 68 to make his way into the playoff with four birdies and one bogey during the final round. Beginning the day 4-under Pierce turned in 1-under 35 thanks to a pair of birdies and a bogey. On the back nine it was flawless golf for Pierce as be birdied the 12th and 16th holes.
Ellenwood put together a 1-under 70 tally to reach 7-under. He got as low as 8-under in the final round before giving a shot back with a bogey on No. 16. The birdies for Ellenwood came on Nos. 2, 11 and 13.
Two-time winner Bobby Baugh began the day with a the lead but ended up a shot out of the playoff, following a 1-over 72 final round that put him at 6-under. The front nine proved to be the undoing for Baugh as he bogeyed three holes to just one birdie and fell to 5-under. Baugh tried to battle back on the inward nine and played well but his one birdie wasn't enough.
Craig Hall was fourth at 3-under and John Perez at 2-under was fifth.
In the Super Senior Division Mike Arnold finished 1-over and three-strokes in front of Rusty Marshall.
ROUND TWO RECAP
Bobby Baugh continues to lead the San Antonio Senior Amateur after firing a 2-under 69 to back up his opening round 66. Baugh will take a one shot lead over Chuck Ellenwood into the final round.
Ellendwood shot the round of the day, a 5-under 65 that included six birdies and an eagle. John Pierce and John Perez are tied for third at 4-under.
ROUND TWO RECAP
Two-time San Antonio Senior Amateur champion Bobby Baugh has fired a first round 5-under 66 to lead the 2016 edition at the Alamo City Golf Trail's Brackenridge Park by four-strokes.
Baugh, the winner in 2013 and 2014, got off to a quick start thanks to birdies on Nos. 3, 5 and 6 to reach 3-under. On the 7th Baugh dropped his only shot of the day but rebounded two holes later with a birdie on the 9th to turn in 3-under 33.
After the turn Baugh continued to keep things moving in the right direction with two additional birdies on the 12th and 18th holes.
John Pierce, John Perez and Alan Baxter all share second place following rounds of 1-under 71. Five players are tied for fifth place at even-par.
Defending champion Richard Hageman is currently tied for 24 after a 5-over 76 in his first round.
