(August 27, 2016) -- Garrett Rank captured his third straight Canadian Mid-Amateur this past Friday, earning him a spot in the 2017 Canadian Open along with the number one spot in the
AmateurGolf.com Mid-Am rankings. The top spot was long held by Scott Harvey, the 2014 U.S. Mid-Am champion as well as this year’s George C. Thomas Invitational winner at Los Angeles Country Club. Although Harvey has had an excellent year, Rank has been a more consistent performer.
Rank’s accomplishments this year include a runner-up finish at the Sunnehanna Amateur, a round-of-32 showing at the U.S. Amateur, top-10s at the Southern and Canadian Amateurs, and a made cut at this year’s RBC Canadian Open. Although he’s an elite mid-amateur, Rank hasn’t played in the U.S Mid-Am since 2013.
You wouldn’t know it by his scores on the course, but golf is Rank’s second priority. When the Mid-Am rolls around in the fall, Rank will have already begun training camp as an NHL referee. The NHL season runs from September through June, leading Rank to work his golf schedule around the hockey season. It’s a balance that Rank enjoys, however, following his father’s footsteps as a referee while competing at a high level in golf without the time pressures of professional golf.
The AmateurGolf.com Mid-Am ranking is the first of its kind and awards points to amateur golfers aged 25 and over based on results in the world’s top mid-amateur and amateur events.
