ANKENY, IA (August 28, 2016) -- Just days after winning his second
Iowa Senior Amateur Gene Elliott was back in the winners circle at the Briarwood Amateur. Elliott finished 7-under-par and three-strokes in front of J.D. Anderson at the Briarwood Club of Ankeny.
Elliott combined rounds of 69-68 and only bogeyed three holes during the weekend. In Saturday's first round Elliott got as low as 5-under following a birdie on the 16th but a bogey-bogey finish dropped him to 3-under and two-strokes back heading into the final day.
Unwavered by the slip up at the end of his first round, Elliott came out of the gates firing on all cylinders early in the second round as he birdied Nos. 2-4 to reach 6-under.
Elliott moved to 8-under with his fourth and fifth birdies of the day on the 12th and 14th holes before dropping his only shot of the day on No. 16.
Anderson finished second at 4-under after holding a share of the first round lead with David Combs who finished 3-under and in third.
In fourth it was Luke Miller at 2-under while defending champion Jon Olson, Brian Allison and Willis Gaer were fifth at even-par.
