SACRAMENTO, Calif. (September 4, 2016) -- First-round leader Bryan Wise backed up his tournament-low 65 with a 1-under 71 Sunday to share the lead with UC Davis senior Ben Corfee and UCLA sophomore Patrick Murphy.

Corfee, this year's Memorial Amateur champion, went out early this morning and posted a 5-under 67 to reach 8-under for the tournament. Wise played in the afternoon wave and was 3-under through his first nine before falling back to 8-under total. Murphy also played in the afternoon and finished 2-under in his last three holes to grab a spot in the final pairing.

High school junior Cooper Hunt and UC Irvine sophomore Ramiz Jamal round out the top five just one shot back at 7-under. Stanford sophomore Chris Myers tied with amateurgolf.com staff member Jeremy Gomberg for the low round of the day with a 6-under 66 and sits in a tie for 6th place.

The cut to the low 45 players was made at even-par 144.

The golf at Haggin Oaks is taking place a week removed from the California State Fair hosted Cal Expo in Sacramento. The 17 day Fair celebrates California's industries, agriculture, and diversity with a variety of exhibits, entertainment, and food.

Granite Bay native Bryan Wise fired an impressive 7-under 65 in the morning wave to claim the first round lead at the California State Fair hosted by Haggin Oaks Golf Compelx.

The University of Chapman senior leads by one shot over El Dorado Hills high school junior Cooper Hunt who opened with 66. UCLA sophomore Patrick Murphy fired a 4-under 68 and shares third alongside UCSB's Brandon Bauman, future Cal Bear Finigan Tilly, and Fresno State's Alex Lee.

This field includes a handful of top division one programs including Stanford, Cal Berkeley, Fresno State, and UC Davis. Many of these players are competing not only for the State Fair Title but for roster spots in their upcoming college tournaments. A cut will be made after tomorrow's second round to the low 45 players and ties.

The State Fair Men's Amateur Championship is one of the oldest and most prestigious Amateur Championships in the West. The Championship is limited to 108 players. Competition commences over a 54-hole stroke play format with 18 holes played each day. The field is cut after 36 holes to the low 36 players & ties.
