ALLISON PARK, PA (September 6, 2016) -- Nathan Smith started off a busy week in his home state with a win at the Western Pennsylvania Mid-Amateur. Just days before Smith will try to win his record fifth U.S. Mid-Amateur at Stonewall Links in Elverson, PA he was busy firing rounds of 69-71 to finish 4-under and win at Wildwood Golf Club.
In the opening round of the 36-hole one day event Smith fired a 3-under tally that included three birdies, two bogeys and an eagle on the par-5 9th.
During his second round 1-under 71 Smith got as low as 6-under with a bogey-free 3-under 32 on the front nine. His birdies came on the 5th, 8th and 9th holes. Smith did cool off on the back nine and in fact he finished over par with a 2-over 39 but he was still able to win by two-strokes over Mike Marron and Rick Stimmel.
Marron completed the day 2-under following scores of 70-72. Through the two rounds Marron birdied nine times but carded a costly triple-bogey on the 17th hole of his first round.
Stimmel held the lead after a first round 4-under 68 where he eagled the par-5 5th, birdied five holes and bogeyed three. In the second round Stimmel fell back with a 2-over 74.
Beginning his final round on the 10th Stimmel was 5-under after his 14th hole but a bogey and double-bogey coming in proved to be his demise. Stimmel also had a triple-bogey during the round.
G. Michael Garcia II and Erik Bertrand tied for four at 4-over
