BEAUFORT, South Carolina (Sept. 10, 2016) -- During the final round of The Devlin Four-Ball Invitational the format is "count both" aggregate scoring and anything can happen. However, on this Sunday 36-hole leaders Colby Harwell and Ed Sanchez were able to maintain their lead and seal the deal.
After a pair of 8-under 64's to begin the weekend at Secession Golf Club, Harwell and Sanchez were able to close with a team combined total of 3-over 147 to finish 13-under and ahead of Ron Kirkpatrick and Vince Sumner by one.
For Harwell and Sanchez, both from San Antonio, TX it was their first trip to The Devlin and they certainly made the most of it.
Charlotte, NC residents Kirkpatrick and Sumner started the day in second place one-stroke behind the leaders thanks to rounds of 64-65, but they weren't able to gain any ground on Sunday as they too shot a 3-over 147 to finish play 12-under.
Kris Devlin (grandson of golfing legend Bruce, who the tournament is named for), from Weatherford, TX and his partner Greg Chapman, from Houston, TX finished in third place at 11-under.
SABER DIVISION
In the Saber Division, played one set of tees forward from the tips, Larry Smith (St. Augustine, FL) and Alan Henderson (Jacksonville, FL) claimed a three shot victory with rounds of 68-66-67 as they posted 13-under.
Ralph Ireland (Augusta, GA) and Charlie Wall (Augusta, GA) were second at 10-under while Bubba Victor (Savannah, GA) and Michael Wharton-Palmer (Texarkana, AR) were third at 4-under.
36-HOLE RECAP
The field in the Devlin Four-Ball Invitational plays better and better every year.
Many of them, returning players who enjoy the southern hospitality they feel at Secession Golf Club have now become familiar with the tee shot choices and targets that are important to playing well there. It takes a few rounds to get the hang of club selections, especially on the island par-3 17th.
Leaders Colby Harwell and Ed Sanchez, however, are a pair of first timers from San Antonio, Texas that took little time to acclimate to Secession. Their pair of 8-under 64s attest to that.
But tomorrow, in the "count both" aggregate that brings so many scenarios into play, no lead is safe, especially since they have only one shot over perennial favorites Kris Devlin (grandson of golfing legend Bruce, who the tournament is named for) and his partner Greg Chapman. Both players, like the leaders they will be paired with Sunday, reside in Texas, but in the Houston area. They went out hot on Friday with a 9-under 63, and followed with a solid 66.
Ron Kirkpatrick and Vince Sumner, both from Charlotte, NC are tied at 129 after posting rounds of 64 and 65. Derek Hayes and Wes Turiano of Pennsylvania are another shot back at 130 - that's just 2 off the lead. And they are feeling good after equaling Devlin and Chapman's first round of 9-under 63 today, moving them well up the board after their start of 67.
SABER DIVISION
In the Saber Division, played one set of tees forward from the tips, Larry Smith (St. Augustine, FL) and Alan Henderson (Jacksonville, FL) enjoy a four shot lead over Ralph Ireland and Charles Wall of Augusta, Georgia. Smith and Henderson stand at 10-under 134, after rounds of 68 and 66.
