LATROBE, PA (September 22, 2016) -- The Western Pennsylvania Golf Association took a big lead in the morning singles and then held on to win their third consecutive Western Pennsylvania Palmer Cup. Playing at Latrobe Country Club the Tri-State PGA made a late charge during the afternoon four-balls but came up just short, falling 10-7.
The 36-hole day started with 10 singles matches and it was the WPGA dominating the session, claiming it 7.5-2.5. Wins for the WPGA were recorded by Dan Thompson, David Brown, Nathan Smith, Kevin Fajt, Rick Stimmelm, Jimmy Ellis and Erik Bertrand.
In the afternoon four-balls the WPGA won the first two matches and halved the third before the Tri-State PGA tightened up the proceedings by winning the last four matches. The Tri-State PGA won the session 4.5-2.5 but it was to little to late.
For the WPGA the winning four-ball teams were comprised of Jimmy Ellis and Chad Warmbein; David Brown and Ralph Litrenta.

Each September the Association's finest
amateurs take on their fellow Tri-State Section,
PGA of America professionals in the Palmer Cup
Matches at Latrobe Country Club. The Frank B.
Fuhrer, Jr. Team that participates in the Palmer
Cup consists of ten amateurs and four senior
amateurs. Once a competitor for the Tri-State
Section, Mr. Arnold Palmer now takes in the
competition as the host of the event. The
competition is thirty-six holes of match play with
individual matches in the morning and four-ball in
the afternoon.
