BETHESDA, MD (October 2, 2016) -- Frank Alafoginis took care of business on the final day and with a 3-under tally finished atop the Middle Atlantic Amateur leaderboard. Alafoginis finished the rain shortened 54-hole event at Congressional Country Club, the host of the PGA Tour's Quicken Loans National, as the only player in red figures.
Beginning the final day 1-under Alafoginis tamed the famous Congressional on Sunday by firing a bogey-free 2-under 70. His two birdies came on the 7th and 9th holes. For the week Alafoginis posted rounds of 71-72-70.
Erik Dulik finished even-par as the runner-up, Grant Houser and Parker Williams shared third place at 1-over while Ben Cooley were in fifth at 4-over.
ROUND TWO RECAP
With an even-par 72 in the second round of the Middle Atlantic Amateur at famous Congressional Country Club Frank Alafoginis remained 1-under and moved into the lead. With one day remaining in the rain shortened event Alagoninis leads three by one-stroke and a total of seven plays by four-strokes or less.
It was a shaky start to the day for Alagonis as he bogeyed Nos. 2 and 3 to drop back to 1-over. However, a run of pars settled Alagonis into his round and on the 9th he was able to turn his day around with three straight birdies on Nos. 9-11. Following the birdie on the 11th Alagonis was 2-under but a bogey on the way in dropped him back one.
The second place group at even-par is comprised of Grant Houser, Patrick McCormick and first round co-leader Parker Williams. Of the trio Houser had the best round as he posted a tournament best 2-under 70. After an opening bogey to fall to 3-over Houser birdied four the next eight holes to turn in 3-under 33 and 1-under overall. Now on the back nine Houser birdied twice more to reach 2-under but a double-bogey, bogey finish put a bit of a damper on the day.
Erick Dulik will start the final day in fifth at 1-over.
ROUND ONE RECAP
After Thursday play was cancelled due to rain, play at the Middle Atlantic Amateur commenced on Friday at Congressional Country Club. So with action finally under way it was Frank Alafoginis and Parker Williams moving to the lead with 1-under 71's on an unseasonably cold and wet day.
Alafoginis began his round on the 10th hole and turned in 1-over 37. With nine holes remaining Alafoginis turned his day around thanks to a bogey-free 2-under 34 that included birdies on the 3rd and 8th holes.
Williams moved to the lead with a back nine surge of his own. On the front nine Williams was 2-over after a double-bogey and eight pars. However, things turned around on the way in as Williams birdied the 10th, 11th and 15th holes to reach red figures.
Three players --Bryan Morris, Jeff Lim-Sharpe and Erik Dulik-- are tied for third at even-par. An additional six players share sixth place at 1-over.
If the weather cooperates the hope is to complete the second round on Saturday and then the final round of the already rain shortened tournament on Sunday.
