FORT WORTH, TX (October 3, 2016) -- Ninth ranked Vanderbilt has taken the second round lead at the Nike Collegiate Invitational being played at the famed Colonial Country Club. The Commodores have reached 9-under and they will carry a one-stroke lead into the final round over No. 8 Florida who is 8-under. The top two teams are the only programs in red figures through 36-holes. First round leader, No. 11 Oklahoma, dropped to fourth and 11-over.
Vanderbilt is being led by the play of freshman John Augenstein who is 5-under and in third place after rounds of 66-69. The 2013 AJGA Rolex Honorable Mention All-American birdied three holes and bogeyed two on Monday. His final birdie came on the par-4 closing hole.
Commodore sophomore Patrick Martin is sitting in tie for eighth at 2-under following scores of 71-68. Also playing well for Vanderbilt are sophomore Will Gordon and senior Matthias Schwab, both of whom are tied for 13th at 1-under.
The individual race is being paced by the 6-under duo of Maverick McNealy and Wyndham Clark. McNealy, a senior at Stanford and the top ranked amateur, has posted rounds of 68-66. The Stanford star posted his Monday score with the aid of five birdies and one bogey. The birdies came on Nos. 1, 5, 10, 13 and 17.
If McNealy were to emerge victorious on Tuesday he would tie Tiger Woods and Patrick Rodgers for the most wins in program history with 11.
Clark reached the top of the medalist leaderboard with similar scores to McNealy as he to posted 68-66. The 2014 Palmer Cupper rolled in six birdies and two bogeys during his round. His best stretch of golf came on Nos. 5-12 when he birdied five times.
The aforementioned Augenstein is in third and one-stroke behind while Spencer Ralston of Georgia and Florida's Alejandro Tosti are tied for fourth at 4-under.
The top-five of the team standings is rounded out by No. 12 Georgia (+3) in third, No. 11 Oklahoma (+4) in fourth and Oregon (+5) in fifth.
ROUND ONE RECAP
In a field that includes eleven of the top-25 teams in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll it is No. 11 Oklahoma pacing the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational field. The Sooners are 7-under after the first day at Colonial Country Club and two-strokes in front of No. 9 Vanderbilt.
Oklahoma, looking for their second win of the season after claiming the The Gopher Invitational , were led on the first day by sophomore Blaine Hale. Coming off a career best tied for fifth finish at The Gopher Invitational, Hale fired a 4-under 66 to tie for the lead.
Hale began on the 9th hole and sprinted out to 4-under start by the 17th hole. His only blemish of the day came in the form of an 18th hole double-bogey but two birdies coming in brought him back to 4-under.
Oklahoma has also received top-five play from junior Grant Hirschman and sophomore Brad Dalke as they are both tied for fourth at 3-under.
Sharing the medalist lead with Hale are Cameron Young of Wake Forest and Vanderbilt's John Augenstein.
Young birdied seven holes and bogeyed three during his round. The most impressive run for the junior came on Nos. 11-14 when he recorded four consecutive circles.
For Augenstein, the Vanderbilt freshman, it was a four birdie, two bogey and one eagle round. The 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur semifinalist started his day on No. 7 and had his most impressive run from Nos. 1-3 as he went eagle-birdie-birdie.
No. 9 Vanderbilt (-5) is in second, No. 8 Florida (-3) is third, No. 10 Wake Forest (-1) is fourth while No. 13 USC (+2) and No. 5 Texas (+2) share fifth
