BLACKSBURG, V.A. (October 2, 2016) -- 15-year-old high school sophomore Chris Zhang captured the weather-shortened Allegheny Amateur on Sunday at his home course, Blacksburg Country Club.
Due to heavy rain on Saturday, the tournament was shortened to an 18-hole final-round Sunday in which Zhang fired a 4-under 68. Zhang birdied three of his first four holes to turn in 3-under 33 and added two more birdies on the back to just bogey for an inward 35. His 68 was good enough for a one-shot win over Buck Brittain.
“It’s pretty awesome,” Zhang told The Roanoke Times. “Beating the college players just makes it a little bigger. I had never won a big tournament before. Now, I know if I can just keep getting better that I can be a pretty good player.”
Zhang bested a field that included 13 players on the golf teams of Virginia Tech and Radford and joins the list of past champions that includes former Virgina Tech Hokies Brandon de Jonge and Trevor Cone.
The Senior Division ended in a three-way tie between Salem’s Jack Allara, Suffolk’s Scott Richards and Jeff Woods of Radford. The trio each fired rounds of 1-under 71.
