BRENTWOOD, TN (October 7, 2016) -- Joseph Deraney backed up a bit on Friday with a second round 2-over 74, but he still sits at 4-under and ahead by a shot with one day remaining at the Tennessee Mid-Amateur. For the second straight day it is Corey Rochelle who is a stroke back and in second place. Like Deraney, Rochelle shot a second round 74 at Nashville Golf & Athletic Club and is now 3-under.
For Deraney, the round began with a bogey and from there it was a day long battle. The recent Kentucky Mid-Amateur winner was able to birdie twice but a total of four bogeys would haunt him on this day. Derany rolled in his birdies on the 8th and 13th holes.
Rochelle dropped his strokes via a five bogey, three birdie day. The birds came on Nos. 3, 7 and 15.
With the second round struggles by the leaders the rest of the field has been brought back into the mix. Most notably Tory Davis and Ryan Greer who at 1-under are the only other players under-par. The duo shares third.
Craig Smith is also very much in the picture hanging four back at even-par.
ROUND ONE RECAP
First round Tennessee Mid-Amateur leader Joseph Deraney is looking to keep his fantastic 2016 season rolling. On Thursday Deraney opened play at Nashville Golf & Athletic Club with a 6-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead.
The day for Deraney began with a bogey-free 4-under 32 on the front that included birdies on the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 9th holes. Early on the backside Deraney, winner of two 2016 Majors of Amateur Golf titles, dropped a pair of strokes but he was able to rebound in a huge way with four consecutive birdies from Nos. 14-17.
Corey Rochelle turned in the second best first round score with a flawless 5-under 67. Teeing off just before noon Rochelle rolled in his first birdie on the 5th hole and then followed it up with birds on the 8th, 9th, 13th and 18th holes.
A trio of players --Stuart Smith, Tanner Davis and Greg Guinn-- are tied for third at 1-under to round out the day one top-five. In all just five players are under-par through 18-holes.
