BOULDER CITY, NV (November 20, 2016) -- Unfazed by a two-stroke deficit at the start of the day UNLV junior Shintaro Ban fired a closing 5-under 67 to finish 7-under and win the Clark County Amateur.
Playing at Boulder Creek Golf Club Ban turned in 1-under 35 before making his big move on the homeward nine. Ban birdied the 13th and 14th holes to reach 5-under and then provided the knockout punch out with an eagle on the par-5 16th.
The win continued Ban's successful season that has included wins at the California Amateur and Northern California Match Play.
UNLV freshman Justin Chong finished 5-under and in second place. Chong bogeyed his first hole before attempting to rally late with three birdies, including back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th.

ROUND ONE RECAP
Third year UNLV assistant coach Phillip Rowe shot a first round 4-under 68 at the Clark County Amateur to take a one shot lead into the final day.
Rowe saved all of his fireworks for the final seven holes of his opening round at Boulder Creek Golf Club. After beginning his round with 11 consecutive pars Rowe opened the flood gates with his first birdie of the day on the 12th to move to 1-under. Birdies on Nos. 14, 16 and 17 followed as Rowe played the closing seven holes in 4-under.
Justin Chong and John Bobroski are currently in a tie for second and one shot off the pace with a 3-under tally.
Chong started swiftly with birdies on three of his first six holes but then cooled off and dropped back to 1-under with 14th and 16th hole bogeys. Unfazed Chong sprinted to the finish with two closing birdies.
Bobroski feel into the black early but was able to rebound with birdies on the 5th, 8th, 9th and 17th holes.
Shintaro Ban is in fourth at 2-under and in fifth is the only other player under-par Nicholas Cantlay at 1-under.
