LAFAYETTE, LA (February 28, 2017) -- LSU sophomore Sam Burns picked up his third win of the season on Tuesday at the Louisiana Classics hosted by Oakbourne Country Club.
Burns, 10-under, bogeyed early on the 2nd hole but from that point on didn't drop another stroke. Following four pars Burns started his rally with an eagle on the par-5 7th before carding a second eagle on the par-5 11th. Burns then capped his scoring with a birdie on the 14th hole.
An All-American from a year ago, Burns has finished inside the top-10 in eight of his final 10 starts for LSU and he is leading the Tigers in scoring at 69. So far this year Burns has played 24 competitive rounds with 22 of them being par or better.
Kent State junior Ian Holt was tied for lead late but he had to settle for a 9-under second place finish. There was a better then nice consolation prize for Holt however as his Golden Flashes ran away with the team title.
Kent State finished the week 21-under and 19 shots in front of second place 2-under No. 22 Texas A&M. In what was a signature win for Kent State they also beat out third place No. 9 LSU (-1) and No. 3 Illinois (+9) while host Louisiana Lafayette was fifth (+20).
Behind Holt for Kent State was a line up full of top-15 finishers. Josh Whalen (T4; -5), Gisli Sveinbergsson (T6; -4), Bjarki Petursson (T13; +2) and Chase Johnson (15th; +4).
