ADELAIDE, Australia (March 21, 2017) -- Queenslander Douglas Klein leads the Golf SA Amateur Classic after posting an opening round five-under 67. Klein leads Western Australian Haydn Barron by two strokes with Royal Fremantle’s Min Woo Lee (WA) one shot further back along with Andrew Richards from NSW after both posted rounds of 70.
Playing in the morning in ideal conditions, Klein bogeyed his first hole the 8th, before closing with four birdies from the final six holes.
“I started off a bit shaky, but I knew I was swinging it alright leading up to it and got a bit of confidence rolling, didn’t miss a putt really inside of 10 foot which helped.
“Everything is relatively solid at the moment, I have been working pretty hard with my coach Wayne Rostron so things have kind of turned a corner and looking alright.
“The course was good, the rough was pretty long as I found out the first couple of holes, but it’s looking pretty good. Greens are nice, they aren’t too fast yet which made it a bit easier holing putts, but I am expecting them to be a bit quicker the next couple of days.
Hayden Barron from WA posted a 3-under 69 this afternoon in a round that included six birdies.
“I hit it good out there. I think something that you need to do well around here, is strike it well, especially off the tee. I played here yesterday for the first time and noticed the rough in a lot off spots so you do need to hit it well off the tee.”
“I three putted the first and missed a couple of six footers out there but all in all it was good, I hit it close enough to manage to put a good score together”. Barron said.
Western Australian and US junior amateur champion Min Woo Lee moved to four-under thru 12 holes and was on track to post a low score but a few late bogeys halted his charge.
“It was pretty tough, I had a good stretch of birdies, I had four in a row and then had three bogeys in four holes on the back nine, I birdied 17 so finished 2-under so not too bad and still in striking distance” Lee said.
