WILSON, NC (April 18, 2017) - Following Tuesday's first round of play in windy conditions at Wilson Country Club, Pat Brogden of Garner holds a two shot lead over Angela Stewart of Greenville. Brogden, a three time North Carolina Senior Women's Amateur winner, is seeking her first win in the championship since 2012. Her opening round two-over 74 was a product of managing her game. "This time of year, I am pleased with how I played," Brogden said. "I was able to avoid three putts, which is key on these greens."
Four bogeys without a matching birdie puts Stewart, the 2011 winner, at four-over 76. She will need the birdie putts to fall on Wednesday to make up the deficit.
Defending champion Patty Moore of Charlotte completes the final pairing. She trails Brogden by three after posting five-over 77.
It would mean a lot to Brogden if she could claim a wire-to-wire victory, "This event is always on my schedule," said the 2007, 2010, and 2012 winner. "You want to play in your state championship. I'm proud to be a North Carolina Senior Women's champion."
In the Carolinas Division, a 76 from Dianne Yelovich of Pinehurst's earned a four shot advantage over Cathy Garris of Lucama and Pam Congelosi of Vass. The Carolinas Division plays a shorter course.
The North Carolina Senior Women's Amateur Championship is contested at 36 holes of stroke play with a Championship division and a Carolinas division (shorter course). Players have the option to compete in either division. The champion of the tournament will be named from the Championship Division only.
